I had an interesting thought the other day. As I often describe to people to define just how much I like a song, I'll say something like "that song would definitely be in my top 20 list, maybe my top 10" or something similar. Then I decided that maybe I'd sit down and try and define what my top 50 or 100 songs were.
As I started the list, it occured to me that it'd be more interesting to make a list that "defined me." And thus, I came to the conclusion that to yield the best closure to the thought, why not narrow it down to three songs.
So......I ask you, what three songs do you feel define you the best. Doesn't have to be based on lyrics or meaning or sound or anything. If someone simply asked you to tell them what three songs "define you best", what would you reply?
In no particular order and after hours of thought and listening, I came to the following three:
Boston - Peace of Mind The Eagles - Take it Easy Tom Petty - Learning to Fly
I found it an intersting thought experiment. I basically looked at my favorite songs and found the ones that I felt best defined me. I also find it interesting that the three I came up with are all classic rock songs and that they all dwell and not taking shit too seriously, yet I'm a fairly excitable guy. I guess that's why I like all three. They're so damn good at doing what they're supposed to do for me.
After having narrowed it to just those three, I thought I'd add seven more to flesh out a "10" list.
Rush - Closer to the Heart Shades Apart - Chasing Daydreams Shades Apart - Sputnik Our Lady Peace - 4 A.M. Joe Satriani - Friends Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite - Scene V (Track 5) Holst, The Planets - Jupiter
I like so much of Rush, particularly due to their lyrics. The five minute live version of Closer to the Heart is simply fantastic.
Shades Apart has been a favorite of mine since I first heard them. Sputnik is the closest to a "pop" song on my list but it holds a particularly special place in my heart so it had to join the list.
Yet again, Our Lady Peace is simply fantastic, although so much of their lyrics are not pariticularly well applied to me. 4 A.M. just hits home for me.
Friends never ceases to bring out memories of summer as a kid for me.
The last two are simply classical pieces that make me want to direct an orchestra and write a book. There are quite a few out there but these two do it the best. I swear I've written books in my head while listening to them.
Well, that took far longer and required more effort that I had first imagined. I insist that everyone keep their lists to a maximum of 10 songs (not artists, albums, w/e). If you do not, I'll edit your post. I bolded my songs so that if you don't want to read my explanations, you don't necessarily need to. Enjoy...
