Anybody know about changing advisors without changing departments?

Say your advisor touched you in the naughty place.

Talk to your department's secretary. She/He will let you know what to do. Although, you should expect to get some of the 3rd degree. Changing advisers is basically saying that someone isn't good enough, and I think they'll usually want an explanation, but that depends on the department you belong to.

The easiest way is if the adviser that you want has a different concentration than the adviser that you currently have. You simply say that their background is more suited to your long-term plans, blah blah blah, make bullshit up.

Yeah I may have to go with the naughty place option.

Without saying too much, my department is basically divided on... everything. Unfortunately I'm already catching the 3rd degree & my current advisor just happens to be on the side thats in power (it helps when you have the chair on your side, as well as a number of other things to maintain control)

Wow, you're kinda screwed. I have heard horror stories about how that department is run, GLHF.

Yeah I think I'm going to go with the "tough it out for another year" option. I'm rather not have someone going out of their way to block me from graduating.
