So I've seen some of the previous threads, but wanted to get any current opinions. I need 4 new tires...from before, it sounds like Sam's Tire may be my best bet. Any opinions on Wal-Mart, or other tire shops?

I'm actually going to Wal-Mart to get new ones in a few weeks.

First, it's really easy to spot if they mess up: just make sure all the lugs are tight.

Second, from what I hear, they offer free lifetime rotations and balancing nationwide for their tires. Can't beat that, since Wal-Mart is pretty much everywhere you'll ever be.

Wal-Mart is pretty incompetent. They messed up my last tire balance rotation, the car still vibrates. I got the tires rotated and balanced and a 4-wheel allignment with in a few days of each other and I still have a vibration that I am 99% sure is coming from an improperly balanced tire or two. All 4 weights are still on the wheels. The free balance and rotating package is nice, but what good is it if they mess it up.
I wouldn't have got tires at Wal-Mart, but they happened to be the only place open last Labor Day when I desperatley needed new tires for a road trip.

I went to Firestone, despite someone recommending not to. Since all I was getting was a tire, and no engine work, I felt fine taking my car there. I was pretty desperate, and they were able to get the tire I needed within a day. They did a fine job, and I don't know how their prices compare to others. It was an expensive tire to begin with, so if they were a couple bucks more than someone else, it really didn't matter.

I agree with them being incompetent, which is why I wouldn't go to them for anything other than tires.

The thing is, if they balanced them wrong, you can go back and have them do it again until they do it right. A pain in the ass? Sure, but it's free.

It may be free, but it is a pain in the ass to keep going back to get it done again and again. Last time I had to wait an hour and a half at Wal-Mart, the time before that an hour. I might just take it to another tire shop and pay $35 to get it done right so I don't have to keep getting it done again.

As far as Firestone goes, I had my car alligned at John's on Pine Street and they did a pretty good job, and got it done really fast. Cheapest place in Rolla I could find to do it also. And I got a neat computer printout showing how far off my allignment was at each tire.
