After having a few "bad experiences" giving rides with people on these boards I figured I would layout some general etiquette that is generally accepted. Granted you can work out any arrangement you see fit.

As a rider:
1. Be prompt and give good directions on where you can be picked up or meet
2. Always have good directions to your house AND directions back to the highway from your house
3. Try and not be a weirdo in the car, there is nothing more awkward then a silent car ride.
4. ALWAYS offer to pay for gas/snacks along the way. Realize calling a taxi or having one of your parents picking you up costs a lot more

As a driver:
Really just the same rules, but its your car and your gas. Its up to you.

Like I said just etiquette, if you are riding with someone who is in the same town or on their way paying a little is nice. If they have to go more out of the way be more generous.

There is nothing like driving a weirdo 120 miles with no conversation and not getting paid.

I often feel weird when deciding which music to listen too.
I prefer loud punk/metal/ska/rock with the sub kickin to keep me awake and alert during the drive, but I feel that it bothers my riders.
Should I care how they feel?
Also,
I hate when they fall alseep.

I have a solution to both the music and the falling asleep problem all rolled into one (especially if you have loud subs): RickRoll the ever-loving fuck out of them.

If they fall asleep, works better if against the window, do a quick swerve or lane change and try to smack their head against the window. When they wake up just tell them either someone cut you off or that you were falling asleep and need some conversation

Awesome. Probably the strangest people I ever gave rides to were internationals from India and Nepal. They were very quiet, difficult to read, and even more difficult to understand when they did talk. I was usually relieved when they did fall asleep.

I think it should be added that it is generally considered rude to be unhygienic. You shouldn't need to ask someone to remember to use soap+deodorant on their bodies, toothpaste or gum on their teeth, and detergent on their clothes.

...unfortunately, and despite numerous reminders of the above in emails and announcements concerning the conference, when it came time to leave - 'ole smelly's clothes, hair, and breath all still reeked. Thank god we took rental cars, and he wasn't in mine is all I can say.
