So i had xp and i was just curious so i happened to get a free copy of vista business via our awesome school and it's just bugging me.
So i'm wanting to go back. Now do i need to just back up everything, reformat and install xp? or is there a downgrade option of sorts so i don't have to reinstall everything on my computer again?

I upgraded from Vista to XP on my laptop and couldn't be happier. Vista is complete shit IMO. But yeah, backup, format and reinstall is the only way to do it.

Just wondering what problems you ran into? When I upgraded my computer over break, I moved to 64bit Vista so I could use all of my RAM. So far, I haven't run into anything that irks me. I'm actually kind of looking forward to Windows 7 - if it's an improvement on Vista then it should be great.
I had to use Vista two summers ago during an internship and the applications we used crashed all of the time. I think part of the reason was crappy applications... but the company was in some sort of "forward tech" agreement with Microsoft so they always used / installed whatever the newest thing MS would give to them.

hahah exactly. basically the main thing i'm running into is graphics problems. and i keep getting times when it just freezes for like 5 seconds, and then comes back and has the message "the display driver stopped responding and has recovered."
i looked it up and apparently it's a pretty common problem. but it just bugs me too damn much when xp works without any problems.

I never had any problems like hardware/driver issues or whatever, I just couldn't stand the new interface. Everything was moved around for, as far as I could tell, no good reason at all. I don't like the new start menu or control panel and most of the stuff I could do in XP took me twice as long in Vista. I'm sure after using Vista long enough, I'd get used to it, but I don't use it often. My main desktop is a Mac, and the main OS on my laptop is Ubuntu and I have Windows on there just for the times I need Windows, so I wasn't getting enough exposure on Vista to get used to things, and when I'm on the go, I just want to be able to quickly do things without having to stop and Google it.
So, I removed Home Premium and reinstalled Business 64-bit w/ SP1 and so far, couldn't be happier. Everything seems to be working smoothly upon first install and I've yet to run into any problems. I was almost ready to drop back to XP, but I thought I'd give Vista one more shot (since Business had all the features I wanted and Home Premium was lacking). I've yet to have anything crash on me which is a plus, no compatibility issues, and yes the UI does take some getting used to but overall not bad at all this time.
I don't use the start menu much, so maybe that's why I don't notice the changes as much... I'd highly recommend looking into Launchy: http://www.launchy.net/

Meh.
If you build a PC with parts specifically known to be vista compatible, you're fine. I have very few problems with vista. But yes, with some hardware you'll run into driver issues and whatnot.
I "upgraded" to XP 64 not long back and had more compatibility issues than I ever had with vista (yes, I went out and found xp64 drivers, but no luck.)
I'm sure windows 7 will bring a nice change though.

so i guess i'll be upgrading to xp soon
What graphics card do you have? Also, do you have the newest driver. I had that problem for the first two months of vista's existence with an 8600gts but I got the newest driver and an 8800gts and it has never crashed like that since.
