You do realize you're on a largely engineering/science campus (read: 1 metric shitton of CompE's & CompSci's) who have pretty much fixed their own shit (and many others') since they were about 8... right?
Yes, while posting on Seek probably isn't the best place, you would be surprised how many students on and off campus have no idea what they're doing with a computer...

For those people, there's Google. For those who are students at the University, there's the IT help desk.
Granted, Google doesn't fix the problem (but it presents a solution) and IT can't fix everything, but like LB said, most people here have friends who can fix their comps for them
Helpdesk certainly isn't free nor do they do data backup and recovery. Friends may not always have access to the resources available to resolve the issue. ie software to move os to dissimilar hardware without formatting, legitimate software/proper licensing, every version of windows for a fast turn around, data recovery tools, hardware readily available to troubleshoot and replace bad components
And if they do have all of these tools available Mike would be more than happy to Interview them for a job.
I'm just trying to be helpful. If you know how to fix your own stuff or have friends that do, great. There are people who don't however. It's like most other things in life, if it doesn't apply to you, why not just ignore it instead of making a big deal about it?
