Ive used Linux very little but wanted to give it a shot with my laptop. I have a Dell Inspiron 2650, so its a piece but handles XP decently. I tried to put Ubuntu on it but it would never complete the installation. Ive tried both the netbook, and desktop versions. I dont know if my laptop is just a little bitch or if Im doing something wrong. So any advice on how to get my laptop to install this would be helpful.

It's impossible, just give up now.

Just kidding. Bump?

Actually, I just installed Ubuntu on an old desktop made by Dell. It was a bitch to get to work.

It turns out that if I installed from a CD, installation would freeze near the end, if it started at all. I tried the "install from flash drive" option, and it worked beautifully. If you haven't tried it yet, give that option a shot.

As for your problem, I'd blame Dell's policy of "custom building a PC/laptop EXACTLY to the customer's order with no hope of upgrading."

I tried to do the jump drive thing, but had some issues. but it was also the netbook version I tried with the jump drive. I guess Ill give it a try again when I get home.

and yea Dell sucks. This laptop has been a huge pain b/c of Dells bull shit. but oh well it was cheap when I got it and its been doing the things I demand of it when I use it.

try the alternative disk... its a straight install disk, no fancy live.. and it fits on a disk better.. I had to overburn my desktop disk for my ppc lappy... installed fine.. but the alternative disk install gave me more options.
