ok I've made dozens of ethernet cables in high school because I pretty much set up the networks for every school the whole district. So I'm familiar with RJ45 crimpers and testers and whatnot. So today I go around the web looking for a kit of my own to buy and they all come with this thing called a punchdown tool. I've never seen one of these buggers and I have no clue what they do. So I'm wondering, what are these buggers and what do they do?

My mind wonders how much of these networks you actually set up or what depth they were. Basically it's a tool that you use for jacks or the back of a punch-down panel in wiring closets.
