Post subject:  New Video Card

Okay, so my card is starting to finally crap out on me, so I need to invest in a new one. The max that I'm willing to spend is about $125-$130. Any suggestions? I've considered the 9600 Pro, 9800SE, FX 5600, and FX 5700. This computer should remain with Windows XP, so compatibility with Linux or another OS won't be an issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Shit, I didn't realize this was in the wrong section. Mods, please move this to the Computer section.

Thanks.

Let's see. I think a 9600 pro would be your best bet with that budget, however, you can try to softmod the 9800 SE ( I believe the omega drivers have that option) to a 9800 XT. Of course you'd need a good VGA cooler to reach those speeds, but I'm not entirely sure if it's worth it. You may want to look into that second option, otherwise go with the 9600 pro.

I'm assuming if I did a softmod to a 9800SE, it would void my warranty? Of course, I don't even know what the hell a softmod would entail... Better hit google up.

Since my computer runs linux, I'm slightly biased toward nVidia, but that's because the 3D Driver support for the R300 series cards (radeon 9600 and onward) is virtually nil. The option to overclock an nvidia card is in the official driver set (hit google up for "Coolbits patch"; all it is is a registry hack to make the overclocking stuff show up), so it's not that difficult to make the GF FX5700 run like a 5900 without a hugeantic temp spike.

Hmm... If that's the case I might look into purchasing a 5700...

You can't make a FX5700 run like a FX5900. The 5700 uses a 128bit memory bus while the 5900 uses a 256bit memory bus.

If you can't wait, I'd go with a FX5700ultra. I'm planning on getting one in a week or so.

This card is linked featured on BFGs homepage:

Or, if you have the ability to save a little bit and wait a few weeks, for about 50 bucks more get a FX5900se or FX5900XT. Depending on what model, you can overclock these to 5900, 5900ultra, or if you are super, incredibly lucky 5950 speeds.

XFX seems to have the best 5900se/5900xt cards.

Well if you can softmod the 9800SE thats the way to go. If not go for the FX 5700.
