Ok, I'm looking to host my own website. How would I go about hosting it, as well as getting a domain name? Also, if I can host my own website, can I get a domain name free? And no, it would not be using Rolla's connection; I have my own with a static IP, if that matters.
it's only semi static. If you leave your computer on 24-7, your ip will not change.
You could run a server, but you'd have to set the port on it. Seek uses 8080, but I don't know of any others that might work. Your best bet would be getting a geocities account and pointing your domain name towards it. When I did that, the ads didn't show up.

You can setup your own webspace using UMR's static setup with a url as web.umr.edu/~yourusername. It's on the helpdesk somewhere. If you want to do CGI, good luck. UMR's support it in a certain fashion but it's not simple. If you want to do a regular personal HTML site you're fine with UMR servers and you can point a domain name to the server if you like.

Web servers generally use port 80. IP addresses can be static even if you shut your computer down (which wouldn't be good, since you're running a web server) and hosting your own site only saves you the money it would cost to host your web site.
Before you decide this you need to figure out what you want on your site.
PHP, Email, CGI, security, how much traffic, is the Secret service going to be upset with you. Also, what is the nature of your site, and is it going to offend/help the campus.
Some examples of things the University would really support, help you doing might be:
Something related to your field of study, or a campus group. Example, if you are in aerospace a web site about building planes out of foam.
Something that is a positive tool that benefits many people. Example, an online slang dictionary.
Benefits the community. A Rolla information page, or a positive commerce blog about Rolla.
Things the University might not be happy about.
An extremely popular blog site.
Hosting files/chat for your unreal clan if you are getting atone of downloads, even if you say that is related to your work at school.
Having a 10 reasons not to come to UMR list on your site.
Things the University does not like.
Hosting a News site that delivers multimedia content.
Mirroring things on/from Slashdot, all the time.
Having a whole site devoted to trading home work solutions.
Content suggesting under age drinking.
Things the University will ‘hate’ you for.
Online Rolla Dating Site.
Rolla Franchise of “bang bus”.
Medical test study advertisements.
Vegan / PETA propaganda.
Anything that gets on to the Martin Sergeant show.
