Do you just want raid0 and raid1, or do you need raid5? If you don't need alternative OS support Promise has some cost-effective cards. Are you sure you don't need a PCI SATA controller?

well, the two new hd's will be connected to the mobo. i'll then have my one original hd. i just want to connect the original one up but maybe in the future i'll buy an identical hd so i can raid. can i do the just the one with a raid controller card until i purchase another hd? im assuming the sata controller only suports one hd?

I got this one after I was in the same situation you are:

Apparently newegg also has the card as OEM for $61 and even refurbished OEM for $45:

I got the retail, but the OEM would probably work fine, your choice. I'm happy so far with the card. If your motherboard already has a Fastrak 20378 SATA RAID controller on it this PCI card actually integrates perfectly with it (they actually combine into one almost). It freaked me out how well it just.......worked.
