So we have a linksys router, and one of the people in my house is being a download whore. I'm trying to find out if there is a way to limit how much bandwidth each port in the router is allotted, since her downloading has been making the rest of our computers load stuff considerably slower than dial up. And we're paying for the 768 kbps cable service...

Hell, if there's a way to limit it with windows, I'd like to know. Or if anyone knows of a program. I'm just tired of it timing out before it can even load minermail.

Is it with Fidelity? We've been having similar problems... I've been getting ~1000 ping to google... I then found out they were being download whores, but anymore I don't think it's them, just the other day the cable completely went down for everyone.

here's the solution: block her ports.

Unfortunately, I highly doubt linksys has bandwidth throttling capabilities. Although I setup a linux router for my friend, and we setup bandwidth throttling because his little brother wont stop downloading crap. So if you're desperate enough, you can probably look into making your own linux router.

I agree w/ heretic^, there is not much you can limit unless you get an expensive router/switch. (i.e. cisco)

Depending on what kind of Linksys it is, you can grab a custom-built firmware image and do some really cool stuff in addition to traffic shaping.

Slap together a router box and put m0n0wall on it. It has a built-in traffic shaper, although the docs are pretty sparse for that feature right now. However, they do have an example for prioritizing TCP ACK packets.

Has anyone here tried the sveasoft firmware? Any luck with it?
