I am off campus and i was wondering if there was a way to connect to the S drive here at school without have to be connected through a VPN.

Simplest way to do it is just use an FTP utility (your normal browser should work in a pinch):

ftp://gpunix.umr.edu

Login with your username and password and browse just like an Explorer window.

10:1, if you're off-campus when you do this, UMRIT auto-sends a nastygram to your mail account, telling you to get off your lazy bum and download an FTP utility that supports encryption. They may have even disabled insecure access off-campus by now. Not sure. Try it and see.

IT recommends WinSCP for secure FTP.
