Also, don't you mean "it just keeps on running, like a girl at UMR from ~/* ..."?
Quite right, good point...
Hey, Lordofthejujubes, I'm still waiting for you to chime in with a comment about how much I suck, even though everyone already knows how much I do suck =)
I do have red hat...just never the nerve to hook it up...my bf said I just need to reinstall windows...but I'd really hate to have to do that, so I'm trying to find a way around that

Unless I'm grossly misunderstanding you here, Red Hat's not a peripheral. You don't "hook it up".
That and you wouldn't be reinstalling Windows. You'd be wiping your Windows partition and installing Red Hat instead.
That's ok. Wssy installs operating systems on a weekly basis, for fun, so it seems. (Just trying to optimize, dude, I know, I know..)
Yeah yeah yeah...so you don't "hook it up'...pardon me, "install"
And I just don't want to wipe my computer of anything...I happen to be very fond of all the junk I have on it now.
I have always said that linux should not be used unless you have a need for it for some reason... or you have plenty of time on your hands. (And haha...wssy does install his os a lot...hahaha...he does that more than he talks to me  kidding, kidding)
I recently had problems with crashing because of a bad video card. You might try swapping out components (like the vid card) and see if you get some stability.
Otherwise, just backup your stuff to a CD or something and reformat it. The MS philosophy, reboot or reformat usually fixes anything!
If you want to be more sure of total stability, only use the drivers that XP or windowsupdate has.
try using a bootable cd linux distro like knoppix, run it for a few days and see if it is stable or not. that should give you an idea whether the problem lies in your hardware or in your software. fyi, a bootable distro like that wont touch your windows install, so you dont have to worry about losing anything.
and if you really think its the ram, try something like memtest86 before you go out and spend a big wad of cash on new hardware you might not even need.
