anybody that owns a logitech mx 500, 510, 700 or 900...

what can the extra buttons be programmed to do? can you give them any key, or are they pre-selected options only? specifically, i want shift & del.

any help could save me from buying one & returning it. i loved my intellimouse 3, but it died. i got an intelllimouse 4, but it doesn't do what i want.

I'm sure in all this garbledy-gook, there is an answer to your question:

Well, the Logitech I have has buttons that can be bound to virtually anything. I've never tried binding them to other keyboard keys per se, though, so I can't answer your question without a doubt. I'm pretty sure that's possible though. In my case, I have buttons bound to Forward and Backward for IE navigation.

How do I assign mouse buttons?

that's the best I can help...basically, it is a button controlled by software...you should be able to change it without difficulty.

Isn't there a program or settings in the Control Panel that can be modified in order to get your mouse to do what you want.

Yes you can do what you want.
The newest drivers have a list of many kick ass things, and one of them is keystroke, which lets you tell it what you want.
I tested it and I can set mine to shift, shift+delete, and delete.
for shift, ctrl, and alt you can have another key stroke. shift+delete or ctrl+shift+alt+s for example. I could not get things like "A+F" or
I could not get it to use the windows key in the keystroke imput, but it is on the list of things you can select.
If you really want to do some thing like "A+F" I think the boomslang drivers will do it.

Personaly I found [backspace] is more useful than "internet back" back space is the default back in IE, if a web page does not want you to use soft back the back space will over ride it normaly. Once you get used to it it is useful for text editing too.

just ordered an mx500

i mainly use shift on the main thumb button to open link in a new window, and selecting a text span. i keep my hand on esc & alt+f4.

tilt wheel is a scroll wheel that you can tilt to either side to scroll horizontally. i do like the wheel on it... very smooth & fast.
