Is there anyway to access my AFS account (I think that's the right acronym) while not on one of the school's computers?
For instance if I saved some file in a computer lab and wanted to open it on the computer in my room.

You can either use telnet or just FTP to your account using your browser.

10x - x = 9.99999... - x
x(10-1) = 9.9999... - x
9x = 9.9999... -x
9x = 9 (since x = 0.999...)
x = 1 = 0.99999

search seek for samba fix. Instal the 200 something byte registry info, restart. Rightclick on my computer, map network drive, make the drive letter either S or Z so its easy to remember. \\samba.umr.edu\login

then click log in under different user name, type in your user name and password, hit ok. If that doesn't work, get rid of the login and connect only to samba.umr.edu, but I'm pretty sure you need that. If neither of those works, be sure you have installed the samba fix and RESTARTED. Otherwise you won't be able to get it done.

I think they disabled samba access to AFS accounts. Use SSH or SFTP instead.

When I try and do the map the network drive thing it keeps telling me that "the network path \\samba.umr.edu\login could not be found."

make that "login" your user ID.
And if that doesn't work, then you should do \\131.151.1.135\"userID"

The \\samba.umr.edu\"userid" worked for me

the IP I gave is actually that of samba.umr.edu, which is actually an alias for smbsrv-ipvs.cc.umr.edu

so if for some reason DNS wasn't working you could use that

in RUN, type "\\samba\[username]\" and press enter. That's what I've always done.
