I just got a new burner for my computer and was wondering what was a good prgram to use for burning dvds. Also about what am I looking at spending for this?

nero 6
nti cd dvd platinum
dvd shrink

depending on what i'm trying to do.
as for how much to pay, sorry, i can't help you there. i don't do that sort of thing.

DVD Shrink is freeware, so don't worry about paying for that.

Otherwise, I've used Clone DVD. The only problem I've ran into, is that I haven't found any program that recognizes the .img images for DVDs. I've been forced to use Daemon Tools to mount the .img file, and then Clone DVD to convert the .img image into the .iso files that are then burned. It's a royal pain in the ass, but it works.

Any other ideas on programs, I'm all ears.

I use iDVD it will run ya 25 bucks at the bookstore and will come with several other great apps.

Is it possible to burn avi files as it is on DVD?? Will the new philips avi DVD players play those files??any feedback is appreciated.......

no... it's the same way as with mp3 to audio cd.

unless you get a dvd player that plays avi. if there is one. mine also plays wmv.

You can purchase players that will play DivX files. The catch is the files must fit into a specific quality range.

--Smart Ripper (extraction and decryption)
--DVD2AVI (conversion of .VOB's)
--AVISynth (processing, filtering, linear effects, converion)
--Virtual Dub (filtering, transcoding, linear effects, simple linear edits)
--Nandub (simmilar to Virtual Dub)
--Virtual Dub AVS (Virtual Dub with Avisynth interface)
--Notepad (for writting/editing AVISynth scripts)
--ForceASPI17 (adds an ASPI layer in Windows XP)
--Others I'm sure I use but don't remember.

Half of the above are free, others are low cost, Adobe Premiere is very expensive. TMPEnc is a better encoder and is much cheaper but Premiere is a good editing program for advanced linear edits.

Thanks for the replies........But i wanted to know that whether is it possible to burn the avi files without converting them to DVD format as it is like data CD..........and then play them on the philips player which plays avi cds........

i can confirm that. i have the philips dvp642 player and i use it to play lots of dvds full of xvid/divx tv episodes.

like someone said earlier, there are restrictions... this player (and others based on the same chip) cant handle movies encoded with gmc (global motion compensation) or qpel (quarter-pixel something-or-another)

For starters, you should have stated that in your original post.

In any case, here is a list of questions/steps that will allow you to find your answer:

Make 2 lists:

1) What type of .avi files are you trying to play. (What codecs are nessary to play the files. You can use GSpot to find the codec that is required to play the file, I have it shared at \\WhtHawk\documents\warez\AV_Tools\ )

2) What type of .avi files are supported by the player. (What type of files can it decode or what Codecs does it have, it might be refered as decompressors.)


Do any of the types/codecs match?

If NO => You have to re-encode the file(s) or not play them. You're screwed, don't bother reading the rest.

If YES => Does the player read at least of the following: DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW? Proceed to #2 (Note: Many DVD players are not able to recognise the DVD-ID on Dual Layer burnable media. Unless the player specificly says it supports Dual Layer writable media, assume it won't work.)


#2 => You may try burning a data DVD of a supported format (one of the formats that matches your player from the previous question) and playing in your player.

#3 => You have to stay to CD's

It makes very little difference what program you use to burn a data DVD. Nero, Roxio, WinXP, Vertias . . . Take your pick.

Just make sure to close the disk when you're done. That means you can't write to it in the future but, many players can't read multi-session disks anyway.
