okay i came home last night to find my computer crashed,
blue screen. i hard restarted it and skipped checkdisk
(shoulda run it) and windows wouldn't load. so i
restarted and let checkdisk run. after running and fixing
several corrupted files, windows would now load. i log in
with my usual user profile (the only user profile on my
computer) and windows worked.

this morning i kept getting a windows pop-up saying that
certain file were corrupted and i should run checkdisk.
so i went to command prompt and ran "chkdsk /f" and
restarted. after restart, checkdisk fixed some corrupted
files and windows loaded. at the login screen i typed in
my user (profile) name and password, and while loading
the profile i get the error:

"windows cannot load your user profile, it may be
corrupted". so now i have to log in with this stupid
temporary profile which has NOTHING set up the way i like
it. my questions:

1) what the f happened (to the user profile)
2) how can i fix the user profile? is there anyway to
repair my corrupted profile?
3) the error tells me to "contact the administrator", but
the user profile is the administrator account, what can
the "administrator" do to fix this

this has happened to me once before, with the same
computer, same OS a couple months ago. i couldn't find
out how to fix it, so i had to copy my files from
d:\documents and settings and e:\my documents and create
a new user profile. but NOW i can't delete my previous
profile, because it is the administrator's profile. which
led to me reinstalling windows, which i really don't have
time for right now. all i want is my stupid user profile
back and all my options set up so i can use my computer
properly!!!!

i'm running a dual boot with XP pro and 98se. this error
only pertains to the XP pro install of windows. i have
SP1 installed but not SP2. please someone out there know
what i'm talking about and how to fix this stupid mess

this is a post i..posted..on the microsoft windows message boards but haven't gotten a response yet (stupid fucking tech service reps need to get off their ass!) hopefully one of you knows how to fix this because it's pissing me off

Hm. My guess is the hard drive is developing a lot of bad sectors in a localized part of the platter. Chances are you've just run out of spare sectors. What does your system's SMART utilities tell you? (Does Windows have something that can read SMART status???)

here are some steps you can do to correct this....

1) login as administrator. yeah, it'll have a temp profile, hut you'll have all the security permissions to create a new administrative user. You should never use the administrator accout as your personal account....bad karma.

-- when you log into this new profile, it will automagically generate a brand new profile. create a dummny admin account "admin". Log out

-- log into the dummy admin account. again, it will generate a new profile. navigate to the old administrator profile and copy/paste the files from desktop/favorites/My Documents/(and if you use Outlook Express..Local Settings as well as Application Data) into the first account (the one you will be using from now on). Basically what we are doing here is transferring one profile to another user. hopefully all files will no be completely corrupted.

-- log into your new main account. you can trash the dummy account if you want, but I'd keep it for a rainy day.

2) Determine the manufacturer of your hard drive and download their diagnostic utility. run it to determine if the drive is dying or not.

3) one program that reads S.M.A.R.T. is called D-Temp. neat little utility, though I'm not sure if it will tell you all the pertinant info.

that happened to me after a reboot. i just used a system restore point from a few days prior and it worked fine after that.

well, i don't use system restore. disabled

also,

this is what i did at first. created a second admin account ("chump") and i transfered all of the files from \documents and settings\nsrbb5\...but this still didn't fix everything the way it should be. AIM doesn't have any saved away messages. outlook doesn't even know what the fuck it is supposed to be. in fact, nothing in office works right and tries to run that stupid installer everytime you open a component of it. okay great all my icons are still on my desktop but nothing fucking works right.... this shit pisses me off SO much especially since it's happened before...but i fixed that with a fresh windows install. i don't have time to fuck around with this shit right now maybe if it was a 3 day weekend or some shit... fuckers!!!

i don't get how the user profile can be corrupted. all the files seem to be intact what the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkkk

really the only hope i have of fixing this is running chkdsk /f until no errors are found. hasn't happened yet
