I have owned intels for the majority of my life, i started off with a macintosh performa, what a POS machine, I have one amd duron running a business computer, and it runs fine. All i have to say is I hate HP and Compaq, which are the same company now, go figure. and Dell sucks too, especially there customer support in INDIA!

I have both an AMD Athon XP and an Intel P4. I can't say one is drastically better than the other since they can no longer be compated by clock speed alone. My Intel runs Premiere and After Effects better, my AMD transcodes/encodes faster with most programs.

Comparing the P4 775's to the Socket 939 AMDs, AMD wins by a landslide. Those damn Prescott's are too freaking hot right now, and Intel has a huge problem since they can't control the heat. Meanwhile, AMD is releasing amazing processors like the FX-53 and soon the FX-55 which are crushing the fastest Intel chips, 478 and 775.
Comparing the P4 478s to Athlon's, I'd say that the P4 generally does better overall.

ahh, nice RAM. I've got some OCZ Gold PC4000 2.5-4-4-7. About a week after I bought this stuff they came out with a second revision that has timings of 2.5-3-3-7. I really want to try out that Crucial Ballistix that just came out.
I love my Amd processor! It stomps the 3ghz P4 in all the benchmarks I've seen and its over $150 cheaper! Plus, I love the fact that it's 64bit, which will be nice when WinXP 64bit edition comes out. The Athlon 64 line has waaaaayyyyy more bang for your buck than any of the P4's.

Intel still has the best video encoding times. HT and their insane memory bandwidth are just too much on such a memory intensive application. Now when it comed to multi-(physical)processor systems, AMD leaves intel in the dust.

some of the video encoding seems faster on intels mainly because the programs doing the encoding where compiled/coded to take avantage of intels chipset, not AMDs. This would make it seems slower on AMDs. You can see examples of this if you use linux all of the time. I386, I686 Distros... K7, K6 xine binaries... I like AMD just because they are generally cheaper. I also like how they handled their 64bit proc... unlike Intel... which is paying for their mistakes by losing big $$ and having to rethink their design.
