The reason you have those forests with grass on the ground and very little underbrush is because those forests are very old. The trees get so tall that it blocks out most sunlight from reaching the forest floor and so the underbrush dies off, and you have these great, tall trees with lots of open space and grass.

Ture.

Also, fires regularly burned through the forests helping to clear the way.
With the advent of man forest fires were usually put out and happened more seldom. This is not good, especially in western states where it is much drier, and the whole trees burn instead of just the underbrush. Dead wood (fuel) piles up, and when a fire does burn it is very devastating.

BTW, this summer will be my third in a row of working for the Forestry department of the Missouri Dept. of Conservation, protecting Missouri's forests against Gypsy Moths.

Yea, so do Fire ants. Stupid things came from africa, I think. Soon, they will overrun the nation. I think right now they are covering everything southeast of us.

Mistletoe (sp?) is also found in most pine trees, and can kill off many trees around it. I have not researched it much, but I know it is a big problem in less dense forests that have little trees to start with.

Next year, the UM System as a whole will, for the first time in their history, take in more revenue from student fees than they take in from government funding and programs.

just curious, where did you get that little tidbit?

Sorry 'bout the wait. USA Today article. They have their "News from Every State" section, and I like to read what makes Missouri so note-worthy. A few days ago, it was mentioned that the University was going to get on the order of 47% of their general revenue from the government--and on the order of 48% of it from student fees.
