I have a question. Do the "powers that be" frown upon anonymous posts? Do we _need_ to be a registered user to be allowed access to this forum? And if so, ... why so?

Are there reasons that a person could be banned from posting to this forum? From my understanding, this is a privately held website and thus the owner has the right to do whatever he wants in that regards,....but does this person not have an obligation to allow posts by those who have not registered? (or why even have the option to post anonymously) Are the opinions of "anonymous cowards" less signifigant than those of "registered users"?

Sure there is abuse by some "AC's" (we have all seen it). But what about those that wish to post their opinions without the burden of personal retribution?

I have many opinions, some popular, some not. I just feel that, in a free society people should be allowed to be heard. If you are the administrator of a certain domain you have the right to deny anyone and everyone you feel causes a problem, access to your website. But on the contrary, what kind of environment do you develop? A homogenous glot of opinion? A common base of "lackies", " 'yes' men"?

A true forum, would allow opinions from all people, great and small,... anonymous or recognized.

Well, considering you're posting anonymously, then Seek obviously allows anonymous posting. And yes people do frown upon it. And I agree with them. Especially when posting something perhaps seen as offensive or just retarded. I think if you truly believe it and you're wasting my time making me read it, then I should be able to find who to hunt down and shoot in the street. But you can do what you want. And people do, and I wish I could stop it, but I can't. I think the admins (including me) are pretty lax about what is said on the forums, so I wouldn't worry about being banned. If we don't get rid of hdncollision, then we won't get rid of anyone.

My 3 cents.

i don't give a fuck. BUT if you are going to make multiple posts it helps to put a face to an opinion. i guess it doesn't matter to me because when i read this shit i end up hating everyone but myself, but me personally if i read a post that somewhat interestes me i'll look to see who wrote it just out of curiosity, if there's a lengthy discussion on a thread, and say there's 6 posts by "anonymous coward" how can we know if they are the same anonymous coward? or 6 different anonymous cowards? if you don't feel like registering maybe you could just drop your initials at the bottom of a post, like this

Me personally? I fucking hate AC posts.

Polls allow for anon results, if you want public opinion post a poll, and if you think you are going to get your balls cut off for your opinion then only put it in your poll vote.

I think that there is an insane amount of bullshit on these forums that is created by AC posters. They just create something thats stupid under their AC cover and watch everyone argue, or they will post a response that is hyper stupid, and 15 people get their panties in a bunch and try to argue with him. Then next thing you know you have a thread that was serious for about 8 posts all the sudden turn into an 8+ page of BULLSHIT.

I guess I just don't see the benefits of posting anon, either you believe in something enough to post under your real handle or you don't. If its the latter then I don't think you should have the "privlage" of posting here.

It's always seemed wierd to me that these forums allow anonymous posts, but whatever.

I think Penny Arcade said it best

I hate AC posts. Not the post where an AC comes in and asks a legitmate question, but the type where an AC shows up in the middle of one of the 5-page discussions we daily have on here and makes an ass of themselves.

Don't be a pussy AC. Register and post under your name. Its just a message board.

Some AC posts aren't that bad. I can understand if you just want to say a real quick thing but don't have time to register, but trolling has got to stop. There is way too much of it. I wish admins would be better about deleting these obvious pointless posts that do nothing to enhance the threads. I belong to other forums and the admins do much more to keep trolls from posting pointless shit. They delete it when they see it, and tell everyone it was deleted. That way, at least AC's will think twice about what they are saying because it may get deleted if it is a pointless post in a serious thread.

Oh ya, and sometimes, I hate Bono posts more than AC posts. I don't know if I have ever read one meaningful thing by him. Maybe we should start deleting some of his posts as well.

Just my "$1"...

meh if seek crashed including the backups, you would have nothin to show that your post and login even existed, except the little chub that some fucktards get for baiting the morons.

i post what i want, and my name is attached to it. i will tell you fuck off on the forums, or if you truely desire that personal touch, i will tell you fuck off in person. i don't really care that much. freedom of speech is a good thing, but it doesn't free you from the consequences of what you say.

What's the difference between an AC post and a registered post?

A name.

Why dont all the AC's just register, then you are still anonymous right,
unless you're a dumbfuck and put down your real name. Problem solved,
now you have an opinion and nobody knows who you are in real life.
If your afraid of other people calling you an idiot, tough.

It also takes away your anomynimity if you post your computer name in your signature. ....but really, if you have a registered name, nobody else can come and say that they're you unless you're dumb enough to let them get into your account.

I know that for me....enough people know who I am in real life that it's hardly anonymous. I don't make it too hard to find out who I am. I'm sure it's the same for a lot of people here.

If you get rid of all the pointless posts then you get rid of 90% of the posts in general, and the forums become even more bland and boring then they are now. But it also depends on what you define as "pointless." I've come up with several classifications of posts:

1) Useful posts and replys, that are well thought out and have some sort of structure.
2) Partially useful posts, maybe be offensive towards another person, or just some off topic but funny shit.
3) Straight up flames or insults, if well thought out, I don't think they are bad posts.
4) The one word or phrase posts, like "ok", "yea", "word", "agreed" or even "you are a douche" or shit like. Also in this category, shit the doesn't make any sense, or has some obscure referense to anime/books or other shit that normal people don't know/care about.
5) Then on the bottom the pile we have the annon posts, almost always useless, once in awhile they are informational, but highly unlikely.
6) Other oddities, like the word game posts.

Of course these aren't strict categories, just generlizations, there are many combonations and so forth.

Personally I dislike 4 and 5 the most, examples of 4, would be washouts like bono and hndcollison. This is the kind of shit that needs to be edited or deleted. Annons should NOT be able to post at all, in my opinion.
