Post subject:  Official UMR Game Servers!

Today marks a new era in gaming at UMR. For anyone who plays Counter-Strike or Counter-Strike:Source, please read the below.
Quote:
UMR’s New Gaming Server Initiative http://campus.umr.edu/it/services/gaming.html
On Friday, September 23, 2005, UMR unveils its new online gaming server, the first stage of an initiative to make gaming and other virtual forms of entertainment more accessible to the students of UMR. This server is located in the UMR data center and has been designed to provide a high-quality gaming experience to approximately 32 simultaneous customers (16 per game instance).

To kick off the gaming server initiative, UMR IT invites all students who play Counter-StrikeTM or Counter-Strike: SourceTM to connect to the new gaming servers, which are located at cs.games.umr.edu and css.games.umr.edu.

In a new-style of relationship, UMR Information Technology is providing the servers and technical assistance, while the gaming servers themselves are administered by a team of student administrators. Student input has also been critical during the technical design and testing of the server environment. The intent is for this to be a student-managed endeavor, with technical support from IT. Students interested in applying to be part of the management team should contact Brian Buege, director of networks and computing systems at buegeb@umr.edu.

Although Counter-StrikeTM is currently the only game hosted on UMR’s gaming servers, as time progresses and demand increases, additional titles may be hosted.

All UMR students are welcome to take advantage of this special service from UMR IT. Non-UMR students are also invited to use the gaming servers. However, there are some things to keep in mind regarding this initial service offering:

Students must already own a copy of Counter-StrikeTM or Counter-Strike: SourceTM in order to connect to the servers. Details for multiplayer mode can be found in the documentation for the game. Students interested in obtaining a copy of either game may visit http://www.valvesoftware.com/games.html.
This project is in the last stages of the testing phase. Students are encouraged to report any glitches or bugs in performance to gamesrv@umr.edu or submit an online Help Request at https://help.umr.edu.
Students interested in tracking Counter-Strike statistics of the local gaming community may visit http://stats.games.umr.edu. This only tracks statistics of gamers using UMR’s servers.
As with any online game, all participants should exercise good sportsmanship. The game server administrators reserve the right to deny service to any gamer who attempts to abuse the system. UMR’s Acceptable Use Policy still applies.

So to re-iterate:
CS 1.6: cs.games.umr.edu
CS Source: css.games.umr.edu

Didn't they already have ragnarok servers et al?

Post subject:

those weren't official umr supported servers.. as ragnarok is a pay to play game.

Well, you have to pay for the server, and then the host can charge people.. my understanding was that they bought a server license and allowed people to play for free.

Hell yes, time to go get owned. I haven't played CSS in like 6 months.

And that's beside the point, RO is a pile of garbage.

I wonder are there any other servers in the planning??

Post subject:

they are public servers

and anyone know (ie server admin) how I can input my player details/profile?

I played a bit today, and I definitely need to brush up on my skill, even though there wasn't much there to begin with. Having a nice, fast server to play on will encourage me to play more often, though.
