Some friends of mine have been trying to convince me that the PS3 won't be launching in the US until the first Quarter of 2007 for some time, but until recently I wasn't taking them seriously. People know me as a big Xbox guy, but I actually have alot of respect for SONY and what they've done to the business. It just wouldn't make much sense to wait until 2007 for a US/Europe Launch. The PS2 is great, but I doubt it has 18 more months of titles to keep the SONY giant dominating the industry.
Anyways, xbox-scene just posted what I've been hearing for the last few days. That the PS3 will launch in November in Japan only, followed by a Spring or possibly Summer launch in the US and Europe. It's still un-confirmed by SONY, but most people are expecting it to be announced officially tomorrow.
Industry officials have already stated that it's going to cost $500 per console, with SONY taking a $400 loss ($900 total system cost). Being able to play the new "Blue-ray" DVD's which are projected to cost $30-35 per DVD and $60 per Game.
I'll have alot more to say when this is confirmed tomorrow, but if it's true then SONY's screwed up big time. Microsoft already said they're planning on lowering the 360 price to $300 (premium), $200 (core) for next X-mas. Nearly half the price of the PS3, but w/o it's perks (blue-ray, cell processor).
I hope they're not pulling a Nintendo and losing their ground because of bad decisions, I don't know about other people but I'm not going to pay $30+ on a Movie.... that's just retarded.

I agree it would be a poor decision to for Sony to not get in on the upcoming holiday buying season.

Alright, well the PS3 now has a 60GB hard drive confirmed. Can we start a pool on the price point. $10 a guess, and I'll go with $599 for the base and $799 for the "premium." Hell, they're copying everything else MS is doing, so why not two versions?

I don't believe they're going to market two versions.

The two versions was sarcasm (because PS is now "Live," they're doing a worldwide launch, etc.). Seriously though, I wouldn't doubt $599. More realistically, $499.

Sony has announced that games for the PS3 will not be region encoded. That's right, region free PS3 games. Read more...
Seems like Sony is counting on a combination of High priced media (PS3 games will be on Blu-Ray only) and avaliability of licenced products to curb piracy problems.

I wonder what region encoding really buys Sony. It seems to me that all it does is make pirates search for a specific region movie/game and that doesn't really seem like that much of a challenge. Am I missing something?

You're right, it doesn't buy Sony anything. More or less it's release controll. Why do DVD videos need to be released with region coding? It basicly guarantees the local licencer a market.
My guess is that since the import game market is fairly good sized, esp. in the US, that they are slowing the adoption of "Mod chips" The people that just want to play imports won't need to hack their consoles. Original consoles "don't" play illegal games.
Actually the lack of region coding is a boost for Sony since it means that they'll have access to a much larger pool of games at release.

A while back one of the top Sony executives talked about the possibility of not having a region lock, saying that it would open the US and other countries to legit imports of anime DVD's and help keep some of the profits in Japan.
Basically, it lets japanese companies sell something that has a small demand and currently requires re-encoding the product. Allowing them to sell both Jap games (new/old) and videos to the US market.
Not to mention removes one of the biggest reasons why people say they deserve to "mod" or change their console
