I want to know if any newer (i.e. past 4 years) games have really captured anyone's attention. I'd rather stay away from FPS, to me they all seem the same. And it needs to be available on a PC platform. BRING IT ON!
Some I have liked so far are: Warhammer 40K C&C Decade GTA: San Andreas

I really haven't played many non FPS games in the past 4 years and the only RTS games I really got into are Broodwar and Warcraft 3. I've also enjoyed playing Civilization. But below are some games I tried that seemed good:
Cultris (very fast OpenGL tetris clone) <free> FreeCiv (open source game very similar to Civilization) <free> Future Pinball (realistic pinball game/table designer) <free> Audio Surf (music arcade game) <$10 on Steam>
I haven't played these games, but heard that they're good:
Oblivion (RPG) <around $50 for GOTY ed.> Portal (first person puzzle game) <$20 on Steam> World in Conflict (RTS) <around $40> Trackmania Nations (racing) <free>
Give Sins of a Solar Empire a try. Very well done, but the game pace can get pretty slow.
If by "pretty slow" you mean that a 10 person match of 5 humans vs 5 computers (with computers on hard or unfair) takes 18 hours, then you're right <_<
Yeah, multiplayer games of this can take quite some time, thankfully there is a save feature for said multiplayer games to where people can quit out and join again later.
