So my 360 just gave me a red light, bottom right, with error code E 74. A while before it did that (like a couple hours) it started going pixely and the colors were all fucked up. From reading some forums and such, it appears that it's a problem with the connection to the graphics chip. Has anybody tried fixing this by the methods online? (removing the heatsink and all that jazz) If so, did it fix it permanently? Or how long until the problem repeats itself? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?
And yes, I know it will void my warranty (it ended 3 months ago).
I've repaired several now, usually the repair only lasts 30-90 days before it fails again. Mostly because of the expanding/contracting of parts. When that happens, you just open it back up and tighten down the bolts again, rinse/repeat every month or so.
You can get most if not all of the parts at Lowes in town, lmk if you want someone to do it for you but it's not going to be cheap.

Another suggestion would be trying to get it to 3 segment red ring. Assuming it's less than 3 years old, if you can get 3 segment RRoD, it will still be covered under microsofts free extended warranty.
Unless this happened in the last 20 hours or so, this is false. It's 3 months out of the one year... talked to customer support yesterday and they said it isn't covered. I went ahead and did the fix, working beautifully as of the moment. And I managed to get it all apart without messing up the warranty sticker, so I guess the red ring is still an option for future failures.

This did just happen in the last day. Not really sure on if you'll be covered, I posted it mainly b/c you had a E74 error. So you might be covered in the extended part of warranty. I haven't really read the details, don't intend to. Just thought it would be good info to look into.
EDIT: Went through my Joystiq feed and it says that the extension is an addition to the 3-year RROD warranty. So it sounds like you would have been covered. Don't you wish you had read that link.
