I'm sure many of you have noticed the UMR Quake 4 server, spotted by Seek42's gamescan. I'm not sure how many of you are eager to play Quake 4. As the admin of this server, I'm interested to know whether you would rather have a Quake 4 or a Quake 3 server.
Some pros and cons in my mind:
Quake 4:
+New game, attractive graphics
+Slower gameplay for newer players
-Clients must have all maps installed on the server in order to connect at all
-Slower gameplay bores some players
-High end computer required
Quake 3:
+Most computers today will handle it just fine - wider audience
+Fast, more exciting gameplay to more experienced players
+Auto-downloading will allow people to download maps from the server
-Older game, some may have lost interest
Because this is a thread about Quake, make a new one.

The issue with starting a server like Wolf ET is that it's a team game, and thus requires more players to play. I doubt if Wolf ET is probably very fun to play at all unless you have at least 8 players on a server. So you have to have at least 7 bored players playing for a time before anyone who just wants to play a good game will connect. Many people look at a team game server with 3 people in it and say screw it, I'm not playing with 3 people. Look at the campus CS servers these days. Part of the reason nobody plays on the servers has to be that not enough people join at any point to rouse interest of other players. I bet plenty of people on campus are playing CS, but nobody joins the campus server because there aren't enough people on it.
With a game like Quake, you can have a good Free For All with just three players. With two players you can have a good 1v1 (if the players understand how 1v1 works and/or enjoy 1v1 at all) until just one more player joins.
Also with Quake, if there was a point where 6 or 8 or so players were in the game, someone in the game could call a vote to switch the gamemode to Team Deathmatch or Capture The Flag, and then they can vote back to FFA if players drop. TDM and CTF in Quake 3 (never played these much in Q4) provide for some pretty awesome teamplay.
So there's why I think a free for all type game is going to be more successful than a larger-scale teamplay game (don't even get me started on Battlefield X - 16 or so players needed to have a good game).

It's a horrible idea. It would split the already small bank of players between servers, and while 3 people on a server can be fun, it's better with more.

I'm certainly a fan of Q3 Team Arena. I've never aquired much of a taste for Q4.

I'm actually a fan of Quake 4. I stopped playing Quake 3 back when UT2004 came out. Came back to the Quake series with Q4. Too bad you guys don't have a UT04 server running. Here's a suggestion though: how about running a Warsow server? It's free, runs off the Quake 2 engine, and looks just as good as Q3, with movements like CPMA. What do you all think?

I play q3 and some warsow on them. It seems like there are too few people to just join the server and play at any given moment. We have to sort of plan mini events.
Or talk to each other/watch each other on AIM / xfire.
