I just signed up for Fidelity's 15 Meg internet service at my apartment. They have not set it up yet, so I called their technical support line to ask this but they didn't understand. I figure other Rolla students would know.

Does anyone know if I can use a gigabit modem and gigabit router with my pre-existing gigabit network and benefit from the speeds on Fidelity's internet?

Thanks for any help.

Having a Gigabit modem will do nothing for you since they've only got a Megabit network.... Also, I'm pretty sure Fidelity requires you to lease a modem from them (it's part of the bill).

That said, if you have multiple gigabit devices on your network and you're sharing data between them, having a gigabit router would be beneficial.

tldr:
Modem: No
Router: Sorta

having a gigabit router is always a good idea, as long as your devices have gigabit ports on them.

+1

If your computers have gigabit NICs, then a gigabit router is definitely worth it for large file transfers. If you have one computer or don't plan on sharing large files between the two, there's no advantage to a gigabit router, it won't do anything to help your internet speeds unless you plan on moving to Japan
