This is my first time trying to set up Samba and I'm not having much luck accessing files from WinXP. ("access denied") Anyways I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, I'll post the smb.conf if it will help, just let me know. Thanks

is it possible to connect off campus? i tried, mapping network drive \\samba\cnskx3, connecting as different user and what not. but it didnt' work

use WinSCP...part of their new "Security Inititive"
If you use wireless on campus or try to access your account off campus, supposedly this is how you are supposed to do it.

Setup vpn and use the IP address (131.151.1.135) instead of the computer name (which won't resolve correctly, if at all).

It will resolve correctly if you point your SMB implementation to either the ResNet or the campus WINS server after you connect.

first, get the plain text passworg .reg from helpdesk

you need to have your vpn connected first

then map to
\\samba\username
or
\\samba.umr.edu\username
or
\\samba-server.umr.edu\username

it's been kinda spotty lately. sometimes i have to try 1-4 times before it goes through.

i'm sure not going to waste 30MB & however much ram it takes to run that f'ing afs-wake crap. who the hell had that idea anyway?
