Find it kinda weird how they release two albums, almost back to back (around 6 months apart), and then how the titles are close together (Mezmerize and Hypnotize). Was it part of a single album that they split up (like "Life is Peachy" and "Follow the Leader" by Korn)?

Yeah, it was a single album which was split up. They're meant to go together, thus, the reason for similar titles and artwork.

It is weird considering I didn't know that they were planning to do that. But any band that releases albums that close together, I guess one can safely assume that that is supposed to be a double-CD thing

Not necessarily. Most double CDs are released as one package.

this has been an amazing year for music; that said, SOAD alone does not have the two best albums of the year. Maybe one of them, but not both.
As for my opinion, I wouldn't even put Mezmerize in the top 3 most likely. Still a good album, but best of the year?? I don't know....

Listening to Hypnotize for the first time right now. Like the faster pace (albeit I'm only through 3 songs right now).

Damn, that was 40 minutes extremely well spent. CD started a little bit questionable, trying to be too SOAD, if you catch my drift, but then it fell into a rhythm I couldn't stop listening to. Damn, that was great. No offense to Daron, but I'm glad the majority of the vocals were shifted back to Serj. And how satisfying was Soldier Side at the end? Wow... Oh, and BTW, how weird is it for staunch conservatives (like myself) to listen to their lyrics? Ahhhh... Pure bliss. Just made a CD with both Mesmerize and Hypnotize on it for the ride home tomorrow.
