JJ Abrams has a hardon for time travel. I understand the desire to write a story without having to follow decades of canon, but it was kindof a bummer. That being said I think they did a good job staying true to the history for the most part but I guess I am not a huge fan so I would have missed a lot of things.
Only gripe I have against it is that there was like 0 suspense factor. They give away the story in the first 5 minutes and then it is just action sequence after action sequence until credits. It seems action movies like this don't spend nearly enough time on motives for bad guys. It was more of a "hey, this happened to me...so I am going to be the bad guy now kthnxdie" I realize movies can only be son long and they want to cram lots of action in, but action is only cool if the audience cares.

Sometimes thats cool. I wasn't exactly mystified about what the Joker was motivated by in the Dark Knight. But it was still an excellent movie. Sometimes you just want to see how they get from A to B, and what will happen along the way.

That's cause they put it out in black and white: The joker was the anti-thesis to batman. The Joker literally outlined his entire purpose when he was dangling from the building. His insanity drove him to only have purpose in breaking what batman was working for. He probably wouldn't have become the Joker w/o bats.
PS: Haven't seen Star Trek yet so please use spoiler tags if you're giving anything away.
The movie had horrible character development. They show 2 scenes for kirk stealing his step dads corvette (while playing Beastie Boys Sabotage no less) and then getting into a bar fight, then boom in the academy. Spock had one scene where he was bullied then boom in the academy. All the other characters had even less, they say their names and you are just supposed to know exactly who they are. If this were just another star trek movie that would be fine, but as other 'from the beginning' movies the whole point is to show where the characters came from.
I thought the federation was supposed to be some big organization. When captain pike hops on the enterprise, the supposed main ship, he doesnt know half of his bridge crew. Then half of them are replaced by cadets.
I have more but this movie got summed down to 2 hours of cliche with a nice side story (the plot) which really made no sense anyway.
This was a brainless cliche blockbuster that does not deserve the praise it is getting. My theory is that all the other star trek movies were so bad that this looks like heaven.
