If Cheng is teaching CS 285 DO NOT take it. In nearly 4 years it was the second worst class I've taken at UMR.

I'm in CompE 319 this semester and I get the impression that it's more hardware-based than the other options.
We haven't really gotten into the protocol level to any detail, but I assume he (Stanley - very solid instructor) is building from the signal level on up and will get to it. The book is particularly good if you can motivate yourself to self-study beyond what is taught in the class; you can make what you want to of the class if you find it not meeting your expectations.
All in all, it seems to have been an excellent choice with quality at least as good as the CS courses (anyone else not impressed by the CS courses they've taken from this department? ).

EDIT: As a side note, are you the guy who I was talking to last Wednesday in the EE computer lab?

We really want to provide good quality teaching to everyone. If a problem appears, feedback (detailed feedback) helps us to address the problem and helps mentor the instructor in order to do a better job. Your comments count; when the faculty member comes up for tenure, poor teaching will (and has) resulted in dismissal.
If you want to come in an chat about any professor, I'll be happy to listen. If you're not comfortable doing this, posting here is fine. If that's
not anonymous enough, a printed document dropped anonymously in my mailbox on 3rd floor Comp Sci is great, too. In all cases, though, constructive criticism is the best - it gives us something to work with.
Thanks,
Bruce

Silly PhD; Seek is for kids. Certainly not a good place for constructive criticism...
... but while you're mulling about here... perhaps you can explain the difference between 285 and 385? Sounds like a focus on everything above the data-link layer to me, with more coding and implementing in 385...

For several years now, I've had a saying regarding everything on this board. To paraphrase Ben: "Seek42. You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."
