I took the class last year. Lots of powerpoint for lectures. I found the material extremely interesting, but then again, I am a physics major. I got an A in it, and thought the difficulty level was right where it should have been. Beginning was easy if you remember high school physics class (ray tracing stuff, geometric optics), but the end got much more difficult when we got into diffraction. So overall, it balanced out.
Maybe off topic, but I know he has a new baby in the family to take care of now; not sure how (or even if) it's affecting his teaching.
I don't know. I mean, I guess if optics interests you, then go for it. Realize, it's co-listed as a EE class, and as a physics class. If you asked me, I'd say it's closer to a standard physics class, but I've only really taken one true EE class anyway. Also, Dr. Yamilov is technically a physics professor...not that there's a huge difference anyway between physics and EE prof's.
Also, if you're that concerned about whether you'd enjoy the class or not, you could always just talk to Dr. Yamilov about it. All the physics prof's I've had (read: pretty much the whole department), Yamilov included, are very approachable and helpful.
