there is a decent size lake just east of rolla, take 44 to the hwy V exit, the exit just east of 63 i think it is mile marker 87. Go the north outer road and run east on it for i think about a mile or 2, there will be a conservation area sign i forget the name of it, just follow the signs, its prob only about 10 min from campus. It's nothing huge, but its a decent sized little lake.

I know of a lake about 120 miles west of here, Stockton Lake at Stockton, MO. Also, coincidently, my hometown. The lake is a great sailing lake it is pretty clean and very high altitude (as far as lakes around here go). Also a good lake for fishing...

I would also reccommend Stockton Lake. Every time I've gone it's been very clean, and usually is uncrowded (compared to a lot of the popular lakes in Missouri).
The Lake of the Ozarks is close, and very popular. However, in my opinion, it sucks and is to be avoided.

table rock is a beautiful lake- much better than lake of the ozarks in my opinion, the lake is a normal temp not 45, the river below the dam is renowned for its trout and is about 50 year round, because it draws from the bottom of a deep lake. But it can get very crowded, because it is 10 min away from branson, throughout the summer and fall it is very busy.

as for sailing, i'd recommend lake of the ozarks. i know for sure it can get pretty breezy up there. i doubt you'd want to drive all the way to tablerock unless you're hardcore.
so do you actually haul a sailboat around or what?

Isn't lake of the ozarks where boats periodically get swamped? And I am not talking about canoes or some shit, I am talking about like 30-40 foot fucking boats. Trust me, if it is where I am thinking, don't go until it gets pretty chilly....

Grand Lake near the Missouri-Oklahoma border has sailboat rental and lessons. My fiancee was an RA for a summer program at Crowder College in Neosho called Upward Bound. Anyway, the last year she worked there, the students all got to do sailing lessons there. From what I understand, it was a lot of fun.

my sailboat is only 11 feet long, so likely not lake of the ozarks or table rock. I do love fishing at table rock though. Lake of the Ozarks is too crowded though,
