I'm considering enrolling in 2 online courses through Meramec this summer. Biology 111 (our bio110) and Oral Communications (our speech 85). Has anyone had any experience with these online courses before?

How do they work? Can I log in anytime and do the work?

Thanks for any input.

Actually, so am I. Except I'm planning on taking their Psych 262 (which transfers directly to our Psych 262). I'd also like some input.

It looks like all of the work is done online. For speech you need to come in once or twice to the meramec campus and video tape yourself talking. For biology you need to go to the meramec campus twice to take a mid-term and a final exam.

I know the speech video taping sessions are on the weekends. Does anyone know when they generally schedule the exams for online classes? (hopefully on saturdays)

ya....

for "public speaking" you have to go onto campus a few times and record yourself giving a speech with a video camera you check out at the library.

for "oral communications 1" i am not sure if a trip to campus is required.

both count for speech 85 here.

I am in Public Speaking or their Com 107 right now. You give two speeches. One is a demonstrative speech and the other is persuassive. She doesn't let you just do it with your own video camera and such. Since that is the main part of the class it is required that you either goto the Meramec campus or you can do it the Video Comunications Center here on campus. Its pretty easy. As for the cost of using the Video Communications Center, they charged me $30/hour+$5 recording fee. I only had to pay for 1/4 hour so it ended up being ~$15 per speech (which isn't bad because the class was only like $78/credit hour).

Most of the stuff is done through blackboard. You have to make 2 discussion posts per week (one by Wed the other by Fri). There were 4 tests, but don't worry about those, they are incredibly easy (mostly common sense).

You can do Com 107 or Com 105 (not positive on the other course number). I chose 107 because 105 requires you to go in for a 3 hour orientation class during the week.

I will sell my book to anyone who wants to buy. How does $20 sound. I think Meramec's bookstore sold it for $60 or so used. But since I don't want to drive all the way back there to sell, I will sell it to any UMR student that wants it cheap.

If you have any other question, LMK.

O yeah, something I forogt . . . no matter where you do your speeches, its bring your own audience. Audiences aren't required so if you don't have one you just say who is in your audience before you begin the sppech. This may seem easier, but giving a speech to an empty room is awkward.

That was easy. I'm signed up for both of those classes.

BIO 111 676 - Introductory Biology I
COM 101 490 - Oral Communication I

For BIO, there are just 2 times you need to go to Meramec. Mid-term and final exam. This count for BIO 110 at UMR.

For COM 101 you dont need to go onto campus at all. No speeches either. This counts for Speech 85 at UMR.

I didn't feel like driving out there and then having to sit in a 3 hour night class all summer. I'm sure this will be a lot easier.
