One thing I have been thinking about recently, pending my transfer to Mizzou for the summer semester, is the anti-MU sentiment that comes from UMR, and also the UMR hate from MU. I went to the UMR vs MU basketball game a few months ago, and it was somewhat of a shock (eh, not really) to see Mizzou students with signs, chanting ‘NERDS! NERDS!’, and it sent me on a pseudo-intellectual journey to try and figure out why our schools like to make fun of each other so much.

Many times at Rolla I have heard people talk about, and even read on these very boards, about ‘how stupid MU students are’ and ‘oh man im gunna make a zillion times what they do fuckin losers bwahahaha time for some halo’. The numbers may not lie about income, but it seems pretty pompous to say something like that. Could it be that UMR students are angry at the fact that their college isn’t as much the mythical ‘woo party college’ (omitting St. Pats) as it is a place where people have to do math and physics, and have no women around? Could this jealousy of the social atmosphere at MU be analogous to the jealousy of the average income from MU students to UMR students?

It seems like the introverted stereotype of Rolla students needs something to make themselves feel better than everyone else, so they use salary (hurrr moneyz make me happyyyy), in the same way that the extroverted Mizzou students chant rude names. People usually assume that the ‘nerds’ are always the victim of social ignorance and general asshatery, but I have decided that it is without a doubt, two sided. This is not to say that that there aren’t assholes throughout the social atmosphere wherever you go, I mean, every group has at least one fuckhead.

Thoughts on this? There seems to be a reasonable amount of intelligent people on this board (read: MONEYZZ HURRRR) so i figured this would be a good place to put this.

Maybe the resentment stems from us feeling they go to college to have fun and party, where we feel we go to pay penance, work our ass off and get a good job. Plus, here you have less, if any, of a chance having a jackoff major...

It seemed like from my highschool the people that went to MU were either the "popular" people with a craptacular GPA, music people, or english majors.

I think it is retarded that they are in the same system as us, yet mizzou has their own engineering program. Therefore we share funding with them at the same time we are competing for enrollment, to me this seems pretty stupid. Also, i took classes up there a few summers back, they have a ton of hot women everywhere... and we... well... we dont, so fuck them!

Oh, and as for them not liking us... well its because we have a better academic program and more prestige.

to recap:

we dont like them cause they gotz our womenz
they dont like us because employers like us more

I'm from columbia, the engineering program there is shit, but at the same time the engineering school isnt the largest program by far. Plus like someone said, its rediculously easy to become a jack off major. A buddy i worked with while i was in high school had switched his major eight times in 2 years and they ended up making a generalized degree for him that incorporated all his interests: Film, Journalism, Computer Science, Speech, and Foreign Language. Granted he admits he wont find shit for jobs there but he'll have the degree.

i think most of it seems to stem from the fact that MU is the flag ship school for the UM systems and therefore has the better sports program, and everyone knows that the biggest assholes in the world are generally drawn to sports over intelligence... no offense to any sports players out there.

I have a friend in engr up there, and the only reason (well, ok, and his gf is up there) is that we don't offer bio engr here.

oh, and I will agree, the MU folk from my school were the "popular" people.

That's what he told me, I was unaware of the program. Maybe he didn't know, but its in the course catalog. Eh, I dunno, he told me it wasn't offered down here. Shows how much I know.

That's an amazing word. Love it.

The people from my high school that went to Mizzou can be classified as: band geeks, sports players, partiers/drunkards, but generally extroverted.

For me, being at Rolla is sort of a sacrificial period of being in a yawn-inducing hicktown so that I might get a higher pay or a better job. Okay, so Mizzou is more fun, but what is wrong with being a nerd when being one helps you professionally (in some respects)?

It seems to me also that Rolla is a save haven for nerds. We have a higher nerd percentage not only because of what is studied, but for the very fact that this school is a traditional nerd/geek school. The non-nerds sometimes have trouble fitting in here. Haha.

That's just my two cents.

Thats my problem. When i was in the dorms everybody was watching anime or playing smash brothers and i would rather do something normal so i was the odd guy out a lot of times.

Let us not forget that UMR was the school to make it on Playboy's party school list and not MU
