Im in compE111 right now and the lab. Its not that bad, but the
lab is a lot of work as I suspected.. Just wondering how the other compE
classes are, from someone who has taken them. Are they a lot harder??
A ton more work???
thanks

The difficulty of courses really depends on the instructor you get. I suggest never taking a course with Dr. Al-Assadi. I had him for CpE 311 and that is by far the hardest course I took as an undergrad. Dr. Stanley is one of the coolest teachers in that department, I suggest taking any class he offers. Dr. Beetner is a pretty good teacher from what I hear, and Dr. Pottinger is a bit on the difficult side.

In terms of classes, CpE 213 is pretty easy as long as you pay attention and study hard (but I guess that's true of any class). CpE 311 requires a lot of outside work, but if you are interested in VLSI design, its a great course. CpE 319 is the easiest course you can take (especially if you have Dr. Stanley). I have taken many other CpE courses, so I can't say much else. But I would definitely stay as far away as possible from Dr. Al-Assadi.

Who's teaching 213 this semister? And 214 is a good lab, it just takes effort on the students part. If they still have the same course layout, you'll create your own VGA hardware/driver and be able to actually display something on a monitor using your board.

thanks for all the advice, 214 sounds cool I'm planning on taking it next semester, also do people really take
17-18 hrs here in this program and remain sane??? I'm taking about 18
and it sucks..... I wanted to get done in a decent amount of time but
I don't think I can do this every semester and keep a high gpa i.e.. > 3.5

i only turned in half my lab reports for 112 and sucked on the rest, but i got an A in the lab. do well on the quizzes and practical exams and youll do fine.

i hope the same is true about 214, ill let you know in a couple months...

the female dr. ali is one of the 213 professors this semester, not sure who else is teaching it. she seems pretty good, has good notes available online, but we have the first test tomorrow and it sounds like its gonna be a bitch. again, ill let you know. oh, and she gives a 5% bonus to your FINAL grade if you let her take your picture at the beginning of the semester to help her learn students' names better.

fuck 18 hours, take your time so youll get better grades and not hate your life. id rather spend 4 good years here than 3.5 that sucked hard.

Indeed.... when you get to the end of your 4 years and you're done, you will realize that it would have probably been smarter to go slower. Just take enough classes that it keeps you busy, but not totally fucked.

yea thanks for all the good advice, I tried to pry these answers out of my adviser and all he can say is, well what do you think.... and shit like that. And that if I didn't like taking 18hrs I shouldn't be here...
Also what would you consider the most interesting CompE course offered here?

Personally, I loved the 315, 415, 416 series taught by Dr. McCracken (perhaps not a doctor on second thought). Starts at the 8051 level and delves into the architecture and nitty gritty of the processors all the way up to the P2 (in 415). I haven't taken 416 yet, but he says it deals with video cards and how they work.

Also the EASIEST CLASS EVER (and kinda interesting and fun) Tustworthy System Designs (I think) taught by Dr. Choi. All algorithms for error checking and correcting. And then open book/note test... for an algorithm test... so easy.
