Well, it's about time to register for classes, so who are the professors to avoid in CS? Specifically, CS228 and 236. Oh, and while I'm asking, what's the difference between Stat 213, 215, and 217? Which one is easiest? I don't plan on doing much with statistics in the future, so any A is a good A.
I think stat 216 is the easiest. If not it is still easy.
I have heard Wilkerson is real good for 228, don't know anything about Yu. He wasn't teaching it when I took it. Even though Wilkerson is at 8:00 it is probably worth it. But then again I know nothing about Yu.
For 236 it looks like there is only one teacher and from what I know it has been the same for a long time. So it really doesn't matter. I haven't heard too many people talking about how much they liked 236.
If Wilkerson still teaches 228, get him. He's cool. I took it FS 2003. Homework was optional, projects were informative yet not a complete pain in the ass, and tests were pretty straightforward. I rarely did the homework, did all the projects and did well enough on the tests to get an A. I did know a fair amount of stuff taught in it beforehand, though (I took CS 328 concurrently).
236: You'll probably get Xia. I had Hilgers. From what I hear, Xia blows goats. Hilgers was teh win.
The professors I'd steer clear of if at all possible are are Madria, Sabharwal, and Xia.
Tossups go to Tauritz and Subra. I didn't think Subra was as bad the second time around for the now deprecated CS 235. Then again, it was the last semester that he had to teach it, and he got some "extra vacation" before the semester started. The class I had Tauritz for was the first time (I think, anyway) that he had taught to undergrads. Maybe he's got the bugs worked out by now; I dunno.
I took Stat 213. Pretty straightforward; not very stressful. I'd advise against Stat 343.
Took Stat 343 and was the hardest class of my life.
I was wondering if anyone has any information concerning cs285 vs cs385 vs cpe319. All of those fulfill the same requirement for me and I want to avoid 285 since the teacher sucks but I am not sure if the alternative classes are any better.

Wilkerson is awesome for 228. I did minimal work and still got a high A. Xia sucks for 236. I have not met a single person that enjoyed taking the class with him. On the upside, you will have a new belief that time *can* stand still. I'm in Stat 213 right now with Drain. It is minimal effort and easy to understand.
I'd steer clear of Sabharwal unless you *really* like examples and Tauritz isn't too bad for AI this semester if you are willing to work a little.

Madrais's db class blows goat if you already know a lot about relational databases and how they are applied to REAL LIFE! The theory destroyed me.
I had the same questions. What are some good 300 levels with good teachers. I am taking AI.
NOTE TO THOSE WHO DARE TAKE DR. TAURITZ'S AI CLASS!:
Be afraid, be very afraid. The class if fun... you learn a lot... but it sucks the life force from your bones. I asked Dr. T, "You work us so hard... how are we suppose to get anything done in other classes"? His reply, "You have other classes"?
After this class... I am looking forward to something less stressful next semester. Help a brotha out.

If you do take 236, get the Dragon Book for a textbook instead of whatever Xia thinks you should use. The book he had us use was next to useless.
