...quoting from a mideval text that insinuated that Islam is a violent religion, Palestinians firebomb an Anglican church. Irony, anyone?

Stupid thing for the Pope to say? Possibly. But an Anglican church? Sounds to me like they wanted an excuse to firebomb something or they are just stupid.

not sure, but protesting a comment that your religion is violent by carrying out a firebombing seems counterproductive to me........so I personally am leaning toward the 'stupid' part.....

Sometimes I really, honestly wonder... if there's not a bunch of people out there pretending to be muslims in order to make Islam out to be a huge joke.

Yeah, they were discussing mixed messages like that on FOX earlier. It wasn't lost on everyone.

i really don't think that they need to pretend. plus you can usually tell that they're serious when they fly themselves into buildings;run into a supermarket screaming "All for Allah" then blow explosives packed with nails and glass across their chest; fire mortars in civilian areas with no warning, then cower behind mosques and schools and demand isralei restraint. its a wonder that their religion is still alive. makes me reconsider charles darwin for a moment.

Why doesn't anyone understand the definition of irony?

If something happens (anythings at all) someone, somewhere is bound to say, "Gee thats teh ironic!"

One of the meanings of irony is

Quote:
5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

And I see where this fits. Unless you expected that calling someone violent would cause them to blow up something? Most of the time when something like this happens, I usually see the people that feel slighted try to prove the speaker wrong, not right.

I don't think that his knowing the definition of ironic is the point of this topic. Even though I, personally, see it as a valid word to describe this scenario.

Islamic extremists resort to violence for everything. It happens every goddamn day. And when one sect blows part of another up, they retaliate by setting fire and or blowing up the instigator. Not ironic.

However the incorrect use of irony could be defended by saying irony was implied by intentionally misuing the word. I doubt that level of cognitive thinking was present when posting.

I fucking give up.

On the other hand, there's the commonly accepted (if dictionary-text "incorrect") definition of irony which, incidentally, there IS no appropriate word for. So as soon as someone supplies an appropriate word for the aforementioned laymen's usage of "irony," we can switch to it. Til then, quit yer bitchin' :P
