I heard something about this as well... What I heard was something stupid high though (like 5000 pages or something asinine) so you probably won't have to worry about that. But again that's just what I heard, could be completely wrong. In fact I'd hope it IS wrong, b/c that's a ridiculous number.
Edit: not that I'm in favor of a low restriction... I just think it's dumb to have a restriction at all especially if it's going to be that high.
I like our printing system, but heavy printers are definitely subsidized by those that don't print at all. At MU, they get like $30/semester for printing - each black&white page they print takes $0.05 out of that $30. That goes quickly

I like how they advise you to do duplex printing (both sides), but they don't have the software to support that feature in every lab. See CS213, it's got a duplexer on it, but when you go into properties to print, it doesn't have the easy duplexing feature that other labs do.

I can see why IT would be doing this though - I seem to remember Karl (or maybe Brian Buege the old CIO) saying that the printing costs come out of IT's general budget & they don't get anything from the University for it... so it eats away at all of the other stuff/improvements they're supposed to do. And it was something like $100,000 a semester.

IIRC, the departments pay for toner and paper out of their budgets for office printers, but IT pays for it for CLCs. Of course, CLCs is probably where all of the heavy printing takes place.
It's not a bad idea IMO, it should hopefully discourage people who print out hundreds of pages of what seems to be random garbage and leave it at the printer. Although I agree with whoever said that the university should encourage electronic submissions of work whenever possible.

Yeah, the electronic submission is a nice idea. I have one professor now who gives us 5 bonus points on assignments if we turn them in via digital dropbox rather than printing them out. Not only is it nice getting the extra points, it's actually easier... I don't have to get up off my lazy ass to retrieve my printout. (or even go to class the next day to turn it in)

I talked to IT supervisors about this a while ago. This is happening. They want to put a limit on how much you can print for free, then charge money per page after that. They also want to disable remote printing on campus because too many people are printing shit to random printers and just wasting paper. Another case of a few people ruining it for everyone else.
But we think this is nothing more than a rumor. I heard about it, but have yet to see anything concrete about it.
Well, a couple years ago when I was working in IT, they had us beta test a new system that kept track of how much we printed, it started with a balance of a certain amount and each page cost a few cents to print, and it deducted from our balance. I forgot the numbers, but it was enough that you could print out a shitload of pages each semester. It worked pretty well, but a few months later, the system was scrapped and I haven't heard of any more print restrictions until this thread.

I sure hope that when it is implemented it isn't a cheap fix. I say this because I do printing for myself, solar house and work (and university department). I wouldn't want to pay for prints for solar house or work.
As for the person before who posted that it would screw ACM. Maybe you should consider printing fewer pages.
