I'm having an odd problem and can't find a fix anywhere on the Microsoft Support site.

Whenever I right-click the desktop, it takes anywhere between a few seconds and a few minutes before the menu appears (you know, the one that lets you create new desktop folders and such). Sometimes it will even freeze my system. This happens any time I've gone a while without right-clicking the desktop. But, after I do it, I can right-click at will and the menu will pop right up. But, give it a while, and the problem re-appears.

This just started happening recently. I'm running XP, and haven't installed/changed/removed any programs for a while.

Any ideas?

Do you have alot of stuff that has added itself to the menu?? it can take longer then to load it into the memory.. and since it's already in memory then, it wouldn't load it again explaining it not taking awhile to do it again... How much RAM do you have??

Its probably trying to pull something up on the right click menu that is taking forever to load up. I had the same issue with Right Click-> New once before. Go here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/down ... rtoys.mspx and download Tweak UI. With that tool, attempt to remove things you dont need from the right click menu.

Hope this helps.

Haha! You don't do preventative maintenance!

You know me better than that. I change my oil every 3,000 miles.

Oh, you're talking about my comp...

Well, if you count the junk included in Norton SystemWorks, I do.

Nope, that didn't do it. Thanks for the advice, though.

Nothing new that I can see in the menu. And I have 1.5 GB of RAM.

Does it happen even after a fresh restart?

The problem has apparently been fixed, and can seemingly be blamed on Microsoft's KB908531 update. A program it install apparently jacks with some computers. Uninstalling it immediately fixed the problem.

Odd, though. I installed the update early this month, and it didn't start causing issues until yesterday.
