I've been hearing about it for a while but it wasn't until today that I actually looked at their website http://www.skype.com and actually saw what it was all about.
It's the same old VOIP rubbish that we've all known about, but it's quite a bit different. It's actually pretty cool. For one, Skype is a program just like AOL/MSN/Yahoo except that it also lets you make phone calls. Actually that's pretty much all it's good for.
Skype to Skype users are always free, so just like IM programs, if it's on the computer running, then you can talk to your friends online, just over a mic or a PC connected phone.
For the rest of 2006 all Skype to US/Canada land/cell phone calls are free. So with a simple microphone you can call someone back home without paying a dime for anything.
They also have super cheap rates overseas, $0.02 per minute to the UK for example. Calls to the US are also 2 cents, after the end of the year unless they extend their deadline.
Skype-to-Skype = Free
Skype-to-US/Can = Free until 2007
Skype-to-Overseas = Cheaper rates (although free if calling a Skype)
I set it up on my computer and it works really well so far. No drops, no fuzzy voices, sounds just like the real thing. I couldn't keep this one to myself.
I've been using Skype since this summer. I was also surprised when I found out about the free US/Canada calls. It's been great to call home or friends without getting calling cards or calling collect. Quality is about the same as a cell phone. This program is a must for people without cell phones.
