Am I reading this correctly? Are they opening up the Ipod to play non-protected mp3? Until now I was under the impression that you could only play converted AAC music files on Ipods.

People have always been able to play standard mp3s on an iPod. Probably about 90% of the songs on mine are encoded in LAME mp3. It's just that whenever you buy something off of iTunes, it is encoded in AAC.

iPods have played unprotected MP3s from day 1.....
ipods will put any of a wide range of media files on the ipod and play them, they simply do not support a "drag and drop" type of managament. Which is a pain in the ass, this prevents you from both storing and playing mp3's and such on it. you can use the ipod as a storage device, but then you cannot play those files you are storing on it. Also the only way you can listen to music on an ipod (with out third party firmware hacks) is to use itunes- which is a giant pain in the ass.

Or you can own a Mac and everything will already be in iTunes, no problem.
In all seriousness, the new iPods just look like they expanded upon the novelity of playing movies. I want widescreen and a bigger screen to seriously consider using it to play movies. I'll stick with my 4th Gen B+W iPod for now.

Wrong. There are a ton of 3rd party apps for putting music on, getting music off, and playing music on an iPod that don't involve any firmware hacking whatsoever.
