This is my problem. I have 2 hard drives.
Both 20 gigs. One is a seagate, the other, a quantum fireball.
I know the seagate has bad sectors. I think the quantum fireball does too.
When I try to install Windows 2000 I copy the I386 folder over and do a:
winnt /u /s c:\i386 just like using winnt4. I've also done the install from the CD directly. Same problem.
Everything goes well till it trys to setup the computer. It waits to see if I want to add a scsi device... since I don't have one I don't do anthing and let it run... then it crashes right after that.
The error is something like:
Error on like 245 in D:\nt\blah blah\acistblah.cpp
What in the world? Both harddrives! Is it my W2K cd?
Does anybody know any bootdisk tools I can run that seagate/quantum might make that would repair my harddrive.. if it could be repaired? I know Maxtor has some type of "Power Tool" for their hard drives.
It is strange that it is giving me an error for a .cpp/.c file with its line number like it was trying to compile it or something. I don't know. That is why I am asking for help.
Pre-imptive thanks,
Brandon
PS: I'd also be interested in some chkdisk commands/arguments to throw at it. I might have to try that if I can't get a "special" disk by the manufacturer.
down load and run the ultimate boot cd http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/ check both drives with the software on the cd, there are menus to tell you what to do. I find that my backed up windows cds go bad after a few installs, so i just make new ones. It's prob the cd.
Thanx for the help guys. I went to that link for ubcd... which led to some other links. It says, or so I understand, the powermax tool will work for quantum drives aswell.
I also downloaded hddregen.exe. The google search for it was a little scary. I had to go to some rusian site, or something like that, to get the tool. I'll try it out! the ubcd also gave a link to a seagate tool. hmm. I will try them in a couple of days after I've taken 3 tests, and completed two major programming assignments this week. They really know how to put the load on ya. I'll post how things turn out incase someone runs into a similar problem.
Update: Althought the harddrive had a few bad sectors I don't think it was the problem. I knew the cd probably wasn't bad... and I had seen this strange error a long time ago. It is strange... it seems to be a bad ram issue. So I pulled out a stick and wola, it worked. I still need to run some sort of sector scan on my HD. I am currently running a smaller, more stable drive. It is working out alright... I think it is a seagate that came out of an old HP. So the moral of the story, if you are installing windows... and see an error that points to a line in microsoft code... it is most likely a ram issue. When trying to install Slackware 10 it gave me an error about finding/setting up the "rootfs". I never had any problems with the ram before.. it could be because I was using it on a win98 OS, and since it was the last stick.. it might not have been accessed as much. who knows. anyways...
