I'm looking for a cheap, good shape coffee table. Rectangular preferred and black, but I can paint it if I have to. I'm also looking for a good tv stand for a flat panel tv.

why not just build both? you're in college it doesnt have to look good or it can if you are good at those kinds of things

That's how I usually get new furniture.

granted i havent sanded or stained yet, or gotten my tv in yet (whole other matter). but for $40 in parts not bad, sturdy as hell too

looks nice, but do the speakers actually act as some support for the top? A LCD or plasma won't do much.. but it looks like it would do some major bending if you threw a CRT tv in the middle

ya the speakers support it, later i might put some cross pieces in and add a middle shelf, but then I might sell the speakers at the end of the year so it would be pretty pointless, but its 1/4" panel board so its fairly sturdy on its own.

I prefer to use cinder blocks. I painted mine blue, it doesn't look too bad. I have since upgraded, and so it isn't assembled anymore, otherwise I'd post a pix.
