Get a $10-15 GoPhone from Wal-Mart. The only difference is the SIM card.

There is no way that's illegal. I did the same thing when my old cingular phone bit the dust and the lady at the cell phone counter in Wal-Mart suggested I do the same thing. Ive been using a cheap $15 att phone with my old sim card for almost a year now.

edit: it was indeed a GoPhone, replacing a razor
