I really don't know much about digital optical, especially about the cables, but they are expensive as hell.
Does anybody have a cable they don't need anymore and would like to part with for cheap?
If not is it possible to buy these cables any longer than 15ft?
I'd like to hook my computer up to my receiver, but they are in seperate rooms? any way to do that?
just pray that someone's willing to part with one or just bite the bullet. it's not like you can cut one to length. i bought a 10ft monster cable one for (it think) $30. there are the generic brands out there but i wouldnt think there's a quality factor. it's an optic cable transmitting a beam of light. last time i looked, there's only one thing that can do that.
Here is a 12' Optical cable for $5.25. The main difference between cheap optical cables and more expensive ones is build quality. Cheap cables do not have as much protective sheathing around the fiber optic core and are more prone to damage. Also the connectors are not as durable or fit as tight and the ends don't get a real great polish which can hinder signal flow. If you get the extremely cheap cable I suggest running it through some conduit or small PVC pipe or something to keep it from getting damaged.
