Might help if you let everyone know how many megs each stick is.

PSU is Extremo Power

Voltage - Output
5v - 30A
12v - 16A
3.3 - 12A

here's my question:

if i have an opteron system with a single opteron (a 242), which has a dual channel memory controller, can i put in the pc2100 memory in one channel and pc3200 memory in another and have the two channels work at different speeds? there's probably a multiplier for this, locked/unlocked somewhere on the processor? my motherboard has 4 slots, and i believe each channel has two slots... anyone with enough knowledge about dual channel memory controllers? if it is possible, i might be intersted in the memory.

Um.... I'm pretty sure it just runs at the lower speed...

Well, I'm under the impression that dual channel memory controllers are designed to work with two identical sticks of special dual channel RAM. I'm sure it would work just fine with two different sticks of regular RAM, but I don't think it would take advantage of the dual channel functionality any longer. And I'm pretty sure both sticks would run at PC2100 speeds in the process.

The way I understand it, there's no such thing as special dual channel RAM. The only difference is in the way the motherboard and the memory controller access the RAM. They're taking advantage of an optimization that can only be used with two identical sticks.

However, many memory resellers are packaging memory in bundles of two to lower costs and entice the buyer. To my knowledge, there is no difference between specially packaged "dual channel" memory and simply two of the same kind of stick.

My guess is that when you use two sticks of the same size, but different speeds, the system will downclock itself to the lower speed. But it will still use the dual channel optimization.

If I'm wrong, let me know. I'm a little hazy on this area.

Some memory sticks are tested so the modules' timings are the same. Others just sell in two packs. It only really makes a difference if you want to know what good timings are without messing with the ram when you get it and not OC too much.

fwiw, my antec true430 has the following specs:

12V: 20A
5V: 36A
3.3V: 28A

so the 650w psu here isnt that great. im sure it can handle quite a load, but still..

yeah thats right i posted as AC on purpose

Dual channel will work with any RAM, provided it is the same size, same speed, and has the same timings. One stick can be corsair and one stick could be kingston, and they would work in dual channel as long as those 3 things hold true. However, since you're running PC2100 and PC3200, it won't run dual channel since they have different speeds. They'll both run single-channel PC2100.

check your mobo manual. the dual channel whitepaper doesnt require the 2 sticks to match AT ALL iirc. but some mobos are more tolerant than others.

at the very least, you should be able to run both sticks at 2100 dual channel.
