OK, three more things:

1) I'm getting double forum notifications. They're both sent from Joe, both at the same time, from the same server (AJ's). Minermail/outlook is smart enough to automatically dump one into my "Seek42" notifications folder and the other into "Junk E-Mail," but if other people are having this same luxury it might be a worthwhile project to eradicate and free up some bandwidth.

2) I really haven't had the opportunity to use the other purpose of seek--the only concern I have at the moment is the forums. I believe the "Server Busy" problem has been expressed in length, so I'll shut up about that one.

3) BRING BACK THE ACs! It's so sad that Anonymous Cowards are now posting as "Guests". Boo!

Thanks,
jkpq45

-I've also made it a habit to copy the text of long posts like this one before I click "Submit," as often the operation will time out and I'll get an error message back from the BB software.

Thank you for a well thought-out post, also pertaining to deleted posts, the only posts that have been deleted are ones that explicitly mention entities of an undesireable nature (breaking forum rules). Yes there is alot of functionality missing from the old Seek42, and YES they will be re-implimented. Seek42 had roughly 5 years to evolve to what it was as you all knew it. This seek has been out for roughly a week, and i'm already recieving hellfire from zealots (not you tim). As for the busy server messages, yes I am working on it (to the point of madness). Legacy version? I highly doubt it sorry =\

I guess my follow up question is then, why have you not combined the experience of Seek42 over the last 5 years with your current work? Seems to me you'd want to keep the bare minimum of what Seek WAS doing and then attempting to implement your own changes and fixes. Based on my very limited knowledge, seems like you reverted to an older, simpler version of Seek and then made your changes because it's easier. While I understand that, why not wait til you've found some way to implement your new stuff on top of the old Seek?

I guess I'm just in the same boat as Paradigm and liked the old Seek much better. As an IE user, I haven't seen a single thing that's actually better (I tend to miss things though). I only see things that are either worse (search results) or simply different (webpage design, logos, etc).

To reiterate quickly, seems like you should use the latest verison of Seek Ryan put out as the baseline to make changes to. You should take advantage of Ryan's evolution of Seek. I feel like we're starting over again, to an extent.

well.. in a way, we ARE starting over, the entire backend has been recoded from scratch, and the "search" implementation is now using an entirely different system. I'm sorry if you all feel like you've lost alot of functionality, but to be honest I'm not going to sit down and make a complete mirror image of the old seek in 1 attempt. If you feel you can do a better job, then by all means, I would gladly give up control if someone else has time time/drive/and willingness to make an exact copy of seek42 with this new system.

Well, I'm just stating that since I'm an IE user, I prefered the old Seek42 which (if I understand correctly) required relatively no work out of you. You decided to change Seek to implement stuff you wanted. You took it upon yourself to devote your own time to improving Seek. I'm saying that I'd rather have the Seek42 that Ryan dropped in your lap. I'm not trying to be mean or ungrateful, just saying that you're trying to fix something that wasn't really broken. Thus, perhaps you could do like Paradigm suggested and try and figure out a way to do "both" (the old Seek and have your new one too). That way you'd keep us IE people happy with what we used to have and the people who don't use IE still able to use Seek. Perhaps this isn't possible or easy, I dunno.

I appreciate and respect the amount of work and time you've put in to create the new Seek, but I'm sorry to say that for me, it isn't a better Seek.

well unfortunately, I cant keep everyone happy. I appreciate your acknowledgement of what I'm doing here, but the old Seek isnt coming back. Dont worry, things will get better for IE people, it's all just a matter of time. (oh and fyi, Ryan didnt just "drop" this in my lap, he offered it to me after he saw Seekant, for those of you who remember what that was).

EDIT: and YES I acknowledge this is NOT the better Seek.

Everyone calm the fuck down...
heretic is busting his balls over this.
From the roadmap I have seen... it will be amazing when it's all done.
For something that's free, everyone sure bitches a lot.

All hail the new Seek42.

How does this have anything to do with IE?

Aj worked on a new seek, with many new features, and it might not be meeting your expectations, but it has nothing to do with Internet Explorer.

Also, he is under no legal, moral, or even a self-interest obligation to do any work on seek at all. If you don't like it, make your own site.

To heretic >

Thanks for explaining the reasons Seek had lost some functionality. I didn't know that you had redesigned the back end, instead thinking you had changed the way it reported file locations. What was the motivation for the redesign? We can probably continue this conversation in PM/IM. I'm also curious about the "road map" C9 referred to.

To heretic's fan club >

I'm sorry we questioned your great leader. Sonic and I just thought someone had to ask what the hell had happened. Even Ryan was confused as to why the new Seek worked as it did. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again. Although,Gil-galad, what are the "many new features" that this new Seek has? I only see the Firefox/Mozilla/etc compatibility that only affects a subset of Seek users. But perhaps I'm missing something.

But for now, I look forward to seeing Seek evolve again, with one of Ryan's more obvious oversights fixed. I'd offer to help, but we don't want Seek to only output "Hello World" to the user's screen, so I'll leave it to others.

And I haven't seen a server busy message in a while and posting seems to be brought up to speed again, so I'm happy. Visiting Seek's homepage still tags you as having visited the forums though, so I guess that's my new complaint.

Oh, and us off-campus peoples could really use DIPS again.

/suggestions and demands
