Lately there have been many accusations of hazing. Two reputable service fraternities have now been accused of supposed hazing.

What does everyone think? Do our organizations have a problem with hazing or does campus have other motives?

What other organization besides IFC has been accused of hazing?

I think campus has a motive to make this campus completely dry like the rest of the UM campuses. The recent hazing events have now given them an excuse to go all out on making fraternities dry (because alcohol is the root of all problems, apparently). Honestly, up until now, they really haven't had a good reason to kill alcohol in the fraternities because of all the good things we do for the campus like helping retention, comm service, etc. despite allowing alcohol.
Anyway, something that's been bothering me is this drug and alcohol survey we filled out in my GE50 lab the other day. The survey involved how much drugs and alcohol you use/consume in a certain period. The question was then followed up by which living option you use (dorms, fraternities, off-campus, etc.). It might just be paranoia on my part but I predict this survey will be used in the near future, like a year, in conjunction with anymore incidents to make all of campus and campus-approved housing dry.
What's everyone's opinion on freshman cleaning? Is it hazing if all members have cleaned the house before as freshman? How would this differ from requiring freshman to take BE10 (we all know how painful and worthless this class is)?

I'm not going to say which ones were accused because I don't want to draw any unwanted attention to the situation.

I agree about you being nervous about that survey, it seems like something that may come back to hurt the school.

In my opinion, I think they're just trying to scare up some info that can be used against us. These accusations may be totally made up or they could be real, either way, campus isn't fucking around.

Why are we afraid of campus? Why did our IFC allow itself to be put on probation after being cleared of all hazing charges? Are we just going to sit quietly and do nothing while campus slowly strangles us?

Campus needs to realize this: The majority of students are 18-24 year old young adults. We came to college to expand our minds, Academically, socially, and in other ways.

We need to show campus our feelings as a whole. The ENTIRE greek life population should participate, just to remind campus that we are 25% of the population, and 25% of their revenue. Most importantly, we need to tell campus that we will NOT be intimidated by their scare tactics!

Yeah, maybe its just me, but it appears that this campus is, shall we say, "pussy". For instance, during those goofy greek week games at the puck, you cannot even MENTION alchohol. As in god forbid there are 21 year olds who imbibe. Im serious my high school cared less about this kind of stuff. What's next? is a professor going to make me turn a shirt inside out because it advertises alcohol or drugs or anything else 18-24 (haha 24) year olds shouldn't know about? You are right... uhh... whoever posted before me, we SHOULDN'T be afraid of campus, but for some reason they have the upper hand. I don't understand why THIS campus in particular is so uptight about hazing. For instance, i BET you anything that a fraternity, sorority, or any other big organization at a big college hazes like a motherfucker. i have friends at UofI who tell me quite amusing stories about their fraternity happenings. alchohol, physical abuse its all there. and what is with hazing anyway? were any of you in the boy scouts? 20 pushups in order to get a weblo? what the hell is that crap! sounds like hazing to me. better shut them down. Another hting (while im bitching) why are sororities so... girly here? they can't post a party flyer? at big schools sororities THROW parties. but i guess we shouldn't be exposing these engineering girls to a greek party. an IFC certified greek party for crying out loud.

You know what? this is why rolla sucks. i mean if campus wants to take away our alcohol, shut down half hte fraternities/organizations for "hazing" and run this place like an elementary school i'll fucking take my money to columbia. they have a mediocre engineering program and a whole BEVY of beautiful women.

First off.. in my opinion, alchohol is the lifeblood of Fraternities. Taking away their alchohol is that worst idea ever. and since all the people in charge seem to care about is retention rates, I dont think they will. Cause I'm sure there are many people who feel the same way as nsrbb5.

As for Mizzou.. since the dumbass reps in Congress are cutting thier budget, the school, in response, actually cut all their funding to the Alcohol partol in order to keep from having to raise tuition there. When i heard that i thought that it was a great idea cause now the blame will be placed back on congress. And hey.. more alchohol for MU students. (another reason to go there nsrbb5)

Alcohol is not the lifeblood of a fraternity. Despite popular belief/opinion, the brotherhood, social life, values, and service is the lifeblood of a fraternity. What do you have without that? A house full of guys, not borthers. Alcohol is more of a social tool.

Back to the issue of campus trying to turn us into a high school. I think the fraternities, the knowns, whoever, should inform the alumni of what's going on around here. Tell them about the hazing incidents, tell them about James Seville being a dick, tell them about the budget cuts. All of that stuff. I think that will give us the upper hand once the alums start writing letters and bitching campus out.

The issue of hazing I dont think is such a big issue at all. I come from india and my freinds there have like weeks of what they call " orientation "....
It ranges from making students smoke/drink to strippin and all sorts of dirty and pranky stuff campus wide ...coz there exists no such thing as greek houses.
I dont see y the issue is being given so much importance....with frontpage articles in miner...

the school should concentrate on giving more freedom to do more stuff on campus.being a campus where "adults consume 0-4 beers " a week and crap like that is not going to do any help to the retention... we are going to end up with more nerds n geeks...

I have a newfound respect for indian students

one question. When I was a kid, my parents would make me clean my plate before I could leave the table...Isn't that hazing? Forced consumption of food or drink? Don't tell campus, I don't want them going after my 'rents.
