Why do people who I have been downloading from ALL year long decide, with a WEEK left in the semester to stop sharing their files and put up a password block???? You know who you are...so I ask...why?

Because I hate all the people that live in the EE lab. Or the HSS lab.

When you have 30 people downloading 100 open files, it's a bit hard to do anything on your computer.

The password for the guest account on nullterminator is "1196".

If you have Win95/98, just use that. If you have Win2k/ME/XP, log on as "guest" with the password "1196".

A lot of the movies that are on nullterminator are also shared on my computer.

On a side note, is there any type of program (or built in win2k thing) that I can use to kick people who open lots of files at the same time?

I can understand when there are just a bunch of people connected, but when one asshole is downloading 7 things at the same time, and eating up every last byte of RAM (for cache memory), it really gets on my nerves.

here is how i have become the computer sharing nazi

first off, i have windows XP and norton personal firewall 2002 installed. im not sure if it is MEANT to be this way, but whenever the firewall is ACTIVE, it is imposible for me to connect to other uses on the local network, or even seek42. also it is impossible for others to connect to you. this is good for those times when you just like to be alone.

second, if you are running xp, go into control pannels > administrative tools > computer managment. it helps to set a shortcut key (in the properties, you can set control + alt + ...) so with one keystroke you can bring up a window. on the left side of the tree click on "shared folders"... "sessions" shows who is logged onto your computer (computer name, user logged into that machine). if you click on "open files" well, it shows you waht files are open and who has them open.

if you want togive someone the ol' heave-ho just right click and close session. you can close open files without kicking someone off the computer, or you can just plain close the session.

this combined with the firewall will allow you to be a total asshole who "shares" a lot!!!

i am usually only this cruel when i notice my HD clacking wildly, or when i am trying to save my bandwidth for other things... or yeah... when i feel like being an asshole.

I installed netwatcher pro 2.2, which can be found here on seek42. It may not be the most sophisticated program, but it does a good job of keeping tab of who is on your share folders, IMO. :)

I'd nearly be willing to bet you don't use win2k or xp.

On my computer at least, netwatcher pro crashes like crazy under those operating systems. With win98 it worked fine, but it's been well over a year since I had 98 on here.

you might want to try with another copy of netwatcher pro 2.2 beta...i run xp and it works fine for me...heres were the copy i run is <dapinstuffnetwatcherpro22.rar>....if even that doesnt work, try running the program as a win98 emulation, since it was built for 95/98/NT(which is part of the xp stability)

I used to use Lockdown 2000 on Win2k with no problem. I since went to XP and it still works fine. It has a couple of bugs with the kicklist, but IP banning does the trick with no problem. It also lets you kick any person you want (just like Netwatcher) and even kick everyone when you run certain programs. If you want to try it, it's shared on my computer.

With Win2k and XP you can right-click My Computer and go to Manage. Under there somewhere is a shares section with open files and what not that will let you disconnect someone from individual files instead of everything at once.

As far as those people in HSS, EE, and Mechanical, I have the IP List for 99% of all the university computers in my ban list (which is also shared). That keeps me from having all those problems that others have been complaining about in this thread.

I feel completely retarded now.

I had version 2.02 of Netwatcher. I swear I grabbed "2.2" off of someone before, and it turned out to be 2.02 again, so I just gave up.

It's working so far.

Thanks everyone.

hey dipshits... If you don't want people downloading anything from your computer, then WHY BOTHER SHARING IT????? pull your head outta your ass. thats just as bad as a) one person in particular sharing a shitload of stuff, then automatically kicking you ass oon as you start downloading, or b) whining about seek42 being an invasion of privacy (back when Ryan had all the problems with CIS)....

QUIT WHINING, IF YOU DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO DOWNLOAD SHIT FROM YOUR COMPUTER, THEN DON'T SHARE IT.
